Obituary for Johanna A. Straczek

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Johanna Straczek, who lived a full and vibrant life of 96 years upon her peaceful passing on March 21, 2022. Determined and capable, she started her own accounting firm and could be seen working daily at her front desk, even after selling the company many years ago. Always dressed with taste and seldom without a signature chapeau, her slight but powerful presence graced our town with a genuine air of European culture. Born in Austria in 1925, she learned multiple languages and studied opera in Vienna before coming to the United States. Here, she attended Sacred Heart University, sharpening a business acumen that suited her keen intellect. She became a revered Fellow of the National Tax Institute, was a member of the Rotary for many years and several of the tax associations. She served as long-term Treasurer for The Saugatuck Co-Op on Bridge Street where she lived and will be remembered for her dedication to her volunteer role, as well as for her exceptional soprano voice that she gifted on occasion at holiday parties; her operatic command of “Stille Nacht/Silent Night” will forever be seared in the hearts of her audience in The Saugatuck Common Room.

Johanna leaves behind a sister, Vera Romatko, and a brother, Carlo Romatko. Her husband, John, and her sister, Nadia Romatko Krower, both predeceased her.

A Celebration of Johanna’s Life is planned for Wednesday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Church of Westport (10 Lyons Plains Rd). All are welcome to attend.
