Evelyn was born in Westport, CT on September 6, 1919 and was the daughter of the late Frank and Jennie (Izzo) Palmer, both from Formicola, Italy. She was born and lived on Cross Street and spent her youth with her best friend, Lucille (Dolly) Purcell. Together, they visited the library and the "Y" after school. She loved swimming her entire life and during the summer Evelyn went to Compo Beach every chance she got. The family moved to Main Street in 1931. Evelyn loved downtown Westport and her first job was as a clerk at Hart's 5 & 10. She met her future husband at Compo Beach tossing stones at one another and on Saturday nights attended Gristede Bros. gatherings around bonfires enjoying beer, potato chips and hot dogs with Westport friends, John and his brothers. Married in August 1941, Evelyn and John moved to Washington D.C. and then to Philadelphia where John worked for the U.S. Maritime Commission. They built a post-war home on Reichert Circle. Summers she took all the kids in her car to Compo Beach. Later she worked at various jobs including a prep-cook at Bon Appetit, a baker for the Westport Schools and a clerk at Klein's. She was a lifelong member of Assumption Parish where she received all her Sacraments. She was a member and past Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. All who knew Evelyn will always hold a special place in their hearts for her -- she was kind, humble, caring, giving and above all loving.
