Obituary for Miriam O. Wall

Miriam R. (Oban) Wall, a longtime resident of Westport , CT passed away on July 9, 2017 following a joyful day spent with family and meeting her first great-granddaughter, Kelsey.

Miriam, daughter of Nathan C. Oban and Geraldine (Elkins) Oban, was born and raised in Nashua, New Hampshire, alongside her twin sister, Marie, brother, Clayton and sister, Loretta. A 1945 graduate of Nashua High School, Miriam attended Rivier College and received an Associate’s degree in Administrative/Secretarial Studies in 1947. Miriam worked for an insurance agency in Nashua prior to meeting the love of her life, Richard T. Wall, on Hampton Beach, NH in 1950. They were married on October 27, 1951 and were devoted to each other for 51 years.

Richard and Miriam first made their home in Hartford, Connecticut, followed by Newington, Connecticut, and finally planting their roots in Westport, Connecticut. It was in Westport that Miriam and Richard raised their family with laughter, joy, happiness and the bumps and bruises that come with three boys. They remained in Westport for over 40 years.

Miriam was the epitome of a “boy’s mom.” - ever present and deeply involved in school activities, sports, time at Compo Beach, the pool at Longshore and trips to Lake Lillinonah. She was a staunch supporter of Little League, working the concession stand at the Coleytown field, while cheering on her boys. While her boys were in school, she also worked as a “lunch lady” at Coleytown Junior High and Staples High School.

As time passed and her children grew, she began her career outside of the home, initially supporting Richard’s new business and mastering the early days of the IBM Typesetting Technology. Her next step was with marketing-research firm, Trendex, Inc. as an Executive Secretary and then on to Glendinning, Inc. Miriam’s real calling came later in life, beginning with the Westport Parks & Recreation Department, handing out beach stickers and transitioning to the “Story Lady” for the young children attending camp at Compo Beach School. Being around and working with children was her love and led ending her working career as a paraprofessional at Kings Highway Elementary School.

Miriam is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her parents, Nathan and Geraldine, her brother, Clayton and sisters, Loretta and Marie. She is survived by her much loved boys; Thomas Patrick and wife Susan (Reynolds) of Litchfield NH, Richard Michael of Westbrook, CT and Robert Nathan and wife Nena (Hyatt) of Northborough, MA. Additionally, she leaves behind her four adoring granddaughters; Casey Lynn and wife Heidi Morton of Worcester, MA, Courtney Colleen and husband Mike Van Nostrand of Northborough, MA, Kelly Ann and husband Ryan Worsman of Weare, NH and Elizabeth Banks Wall of Westborough, MA. She was delighted and overjoyed to meet her great-granddaughter, Kelsey Katherine Van Nostrand, of Northborough, MA shortly before she passed.

Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours on Monday, July 17, 2017 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
